Northern Lights – Aurora Borealis
The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are a natural light phenomenon caused by charged particles from the sun interacting with the Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere. These lights are most commonly seen in high-latitude regions near the Arctic Circle, and Northern Norway is one of the most reliable places in the world to witness them.
Tromsø, located at 69°N, lies directly beneath the auroral oval or Northern Light belt —a ring-shaped zone around the geomagnetic poles where auroral activity is most frequent. This location means that even moderate solar activity can result in visible auroras overhead.
When to see the Northern Lights
The aurora season in Tromsø runs from late September to early April. The highest chances of seeing the lights occur during the darkest months—November, December, and January—when the sun remains below the horizon for weeks at a time (known as the polar night). However, sightings are possible as early as late September and as late as early April, as long as the sky is dark and clear.
To see the Northern Lights, several conditions need to align:
- Dark skies: Light pollution from cities or towns can reduce visibility, so darker areas away from artificial light are ideal.
- Clear weather: Cloud cover can block the view of the aurora entirely. Real-time weather and satellite maps are often used to find clear patches of sky.
- Solar activity: The intensity and frequency of auroras are tied to activity on the sun, particularly solar flares and coronal mass ejections.

Being on a ship like ‘Ocean Sherpa’ offers a few distinct advantages to watch the Northern Lights: an open 360-degree view of the sky with no buildings, trees, or mountains blocking the horizon; access to remote areas with no light pollution; and the ability to reposition based on weather conditions. This can increase the chance of seeing the lights clearly, especially when cloud cover is patchy or conditions change rapidly.
